WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today on Twitter, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (Q-GA) challenged Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) to a “debate on the Green New Deal.”
In a series of tweets, Greene proposed the debate with Ocasio-Cortez, citing the New York Democrat’s “degree in Economics.” The Green New Deal, a series of policy proposals co-sponsored by Ocasio-Cortez, seeks to overhaul U.S. policies to align the government with policy goals meant to blunt the effects of climate change. Ocasio-Cortez has become somewhat of a standard bearer of the Green New Deal to pundits and politicians on the right.
It took Rep. Ocasio-Cortez a few hours, but she eventually responded to the debate invitation. While declining it politely, Ocasio-Cortez also suggested someone else for Greene to debate who “might be more [Greene’s] speed.”
“While Rep. Greene’s offer is surely enticing — who doesn’t like arguing with a ham salad in a designer dress after, all,” Ocasio-Cortez told reporters as she returned from lunch, “I’m going to have to decline the invitation. Anybody who wants to get the same vibe, though, is free to watch the Washington Generals debate the Harlem Globetrotters on the basketball court. Maybe Marjorie should punch her weight and debate a potato instead.”
Ocasio-Cortez suggested that “any potato will prove itself a formidable challenge” for Greene.
“Boil ’em, mash ’em, stick ’em in a stew, it doesn’t matter,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “Any potato will prove itself a formidable challenge to her. And, once she’s proven that she can best the potato in an argument, we’ll talk about the two of us debating. But something tells me Marjorie thinks you debate with dueling pistols at dawn, and not with words, which is particularly ironic considering how many words she manages to get out of her mouth every day.”
Rep. Ocasio-Cortez even offered to call her “good friend Mr. Potato Head” to see if he’d be willing to help Greene build up her debate chops.
“I know you know who he is, because you and your buddies kept talking about his penis for like two weeks not that long ago,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted. “Just let me know if you want me to ask him if he’d be willing to help you with your debate prep, Marjorie.”
Qongresswoman Greene has not responded to Ocasio-Cortez’s counter offer as of the time of publication.
