WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) was absolutely brutalized by then-candidate Donald Trump during the 2016 Republican primary. Trump accused Cruz’s father of helping to plot John F. Kennedy’s assassination. He insulted Cruz’s wife’s looks. If anyone on the Hill would be justified in being anti-Trump even as they were a member of his political party, it would be Cruz.
Yet, as time has has gone by, Cruz has found himself more and more as one of Trump’s staunchest allies. Political scientists call this the “Political Cucking Phenomenon.” The PCP theory postulates that a politician’s instincts for career survival and self-dealing will prostrate themselves before any master they feel can bolster them in an election. For whatever his reasons, Cruz is now tightly aligned with Trump.
This week, Sen. Cruz has defended Trump’s decision to bomb and kill Iranian Major General Qasem Soleimani while he was traveling in Iraq. The drone strike has caused many to wonder if escalating tensions between Iran and the U.S. — which begin to heat up when Trump pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal brokered by the previous black administration — would push America into yet another war in the Middle East. Cruz has been a very outspoken critic of the Iran deal since it was signed, and he has defended Trump’s decision to kill Soleimani in numerous media appearances.
This morning, the Texas Republican joined several of his GOP colleagues, who have begun to try to paint Democrats as terrorist sympathizers when they question the motivation and timing of Soleimani’s assassination. Many, even quite a few outspoken and vocal Republicans and conservatives in the commentariat, have wondered aloud if Trump is simply attempting to “wag the dog” and distract the country from the impeachment proceedings against him in the House.
While appearing on Fox News this morning, Cruz blasted Democrats, saying they “cry over terrorists from other countries” while insulting the terrorists Trump counts among his rabid, devoted base.
“Now, Brian, I’m just saying that the least Democrats could do is mourn American Terrorists when they electrocute themselves after they try to fuck a light socket,” Cruz said. “Or when they stub their dicks when they’re boning their guns to prove how safe they are to own the libs. The tiki torch carrying, red hat wearing, backyard commando militia men that will truly make this country great again by establishing a Christofascist, white ethnostate are the terrorists we want to encourage to flourish and grow in this country. But no, they act all shocked and angry when one of these good, clean, ammo hoarding patriots starts a rally to defend a confederate monument and starts a chant about Jews not replacing them. They act all indignant when someone plasters their van in MAGA propaganda and starts mailing bombs to Democrats. You know that makes them? Cucks.”
Senator Cruz said it “wounds [him] to the core” when he sees Democrats on TV questioning the timing of Trump’s order to strike Soleimani. He says that even though they all ultimately agree that he was a terrorist and a danger to American interests abroad, they are “doing this country a disservice” by acting as if terrorists also live in this country, and he says instead of labeling people as “deplorable just for simply wanting to force everyone around to submit to a theocratic vision of America,” Democrats should embrace Trumpism and “support our Dear President, no matter what he says or does.”
“Why do Democrats cry over terrorists from other countries, but vilify the ones who voted for Trump,” Cruz asked rhetorically. “I see them literally crying literal tears and demanding we give Iranian terrorists their own holidays here in America, while they sign up dead people to vote sixteen times and then get six trillion illegal Mexicans — real terrorists if you ask me — to vote in California, and yet they can’t admit that a tiki torch makes you look slimmer, more trim, and like an unabashed sycophantic, card carrying member of the klan…but in a GOOD way? That’s just outrageous. Simply outrageous.”
